Thursday, July 28: ADF&G Emergency Order: Fish Creek Sport Fishing Open 7 Days Per Week with Increased Red Salmon Limits
Summary: The ADF&G through the Alaska Board of Fisheries has issued an emergency order opening up Fish Creek (Big Lake outlet stream) to daily fishing on Monday, August 1, and continuing through Friday, August 13. By regulation, Fish Creek is a weekend-only fishery and was slated to open on Saturday, August 14, but an exceptionally strong run of reds this year prompted the department to allow for extra harvest opportunities for anglers by opening up two weeks early and doubling the bag limit from the current three (3) to six (6). However, silver salmon may not be retained during these daily openings and must be released if caught.

Thursday, July 21: ADF&G Emergency Order: Kenai River Red Salmon Bag Limits Increased
Summary: The ADF&G through the Alaska Board of Fisheries has issued an emergency order increasing the daily bag limit for red salmon on the lower/middle Kenai River from the current three (3) to six (6) effective this Friday, July 22, and continuing through December 31. Also, the possession limit doubles, from six (6) to 12. The projected run size is for at least 2.3 million reds and the escapement goal of 750,00-1,300,000 is anticipated to be achieved, thus allowing anglers to harvest additional fish. The bag and possession limits on the upper Kenai and Russian rivers remain at current levels (3/6).
In conjunction with this emergency order is a second emergency order increasing hours for dip netting, now allowed 24 hours a day through July 31.

Summary: The ADF&G through the Alaska Board of Fisheries has issued an emergency order increasing the daily bag limit for pink salmon in Port Valdez from the current six (6) to twelve (12) effective this Friday, July 15, and continuing through December 31. Also, the possession limit doubles, from 12 to 24. Thursday, July 7: Fish Creek Salmon Weir Operational for 2022 Season
Summary: The ADF&G weir on Fish Creek (Big Lake drainage) began operating on July 5. After the first day of operation, 3 red salmon were recorded passing upstream. No other salmon species were documented. The first reds last year were recorded on July 12 (50 fish), in 2020 on July 3 (4 fish), in 2019 on July 9 (1 fish), and in 2018 on July 9 (557 fish). Large numbers of fish typically enter the drainage starting around July 15.

Tuesday, July 5: ADF&G Emergency Order: Kasilof River Red Salmon Limits Increased
Summary: The ADF&G through the Alaska Board of Fisheries has issued an emergency order increasing the daily bag limit for red salmon on the Kasilof River from the current three (3) to six (6) effective this Thursday, July 7, and continuing through December 31. Also, the possession limit doubles, from six (6) to 12. As of July 4, over 120,700 reds had passed through the sonar site with the biological escapement goal being 140,000-320,000 fish. The current escapement is, at current rate, projected to exceed the biological escapement, thus allowing for anglers to harvest additional fish.
In conjunction with this emergency order is a second emergency order increasing the area for dip netting, now allowed from the river mouth at Cook Inlet up to the Sterling Highway bridge.

Summary: By emergency order, the Copper River drainage (upstream of Haley Creek) is reopened to retention of king salmon starting Monday, June 27. The daily bag limit is one (1) fish with a total annual limit of two (2) kings. Bait and multiple hooks (including treble hooks) may be used where allowed by regulation. This order affects the roadside fisheries of Klutina, Tonsina, and Gulkana rivers. Due to changes in the abundance projection in final inriver run estimate, additional opportunity is therefore allowed as seasonal escapement goals will be reached.

Monday, June 20: ADF&G Emergency Order: Russian River Sanctuary Opens Early to Sport Fishing for Red Salmon
Summary: By emergency order, the Russian River Sanctuary, that area at the confluence of the Russian and Kenai rivers, will open to fishing on Wednesday, June 22, through Thursday, July 14. The weir near the outlet of Lower Russian Lake has passed 9,157 reds as of Sunday, June 19, and is expected to meet the biological escapement goal of 22,000-42,000 early-run fish. This order allows anglers additional time and area to harvest red salmon. The bag and possession limits remain three (3) and six (6), respectively.

Monday, June 20: ADF&G Emergency Order: Susitna River Drainage Closed to Sport Fishing for King Salmon
Summary: By emergency order, the entire Susitna River drainage will close to king salmon fishing effective Thursday, June 23, and continuing through Wednesday, July 13. This closure affects all East-Side tributary streams such as Willow, Little Willow, Kashwitna, Sheep, Montana and other roadside waters as well as the Talkeetna and Chulitna river systems. The gear restriction of unbaited, single hook, artificial lure only still applies. King salmon populations are very weak region wide and indications are that the Susitna River drainage stocks are no exceptions.

Monday, June 20: Gulkana River Salmon Weir Operational for 2022 Season
Summary: The ADF&G weir on Gulkana River began operating on June 17. As of June 19, no salmon have been recorded passing upstream. Generally, the first king and red salmon show up at the weir between June 5 and 10 but have been documented as early as June 1. Runs appear to be a week to ten days late throughout the Upper Copper River drainage due to unseasonably cold and high water conditions.

Monday, May 16: Ninilchik River (Mile 2) Salmon Weir Operational for 2022 Season

Friday, May 13: New Roadside Angler Fishing Report Posted
Summary: The third weekly fishing report of the 2022 season posted in the Hot Spots of the Week section; featuring early returning king and red salmon, Cook Inlet halibut, Kasilof River steelhead trout, Mat-Su Valley trout lakes, Homer and Seward Dolly Varden, and Turnagain Arm/20-Mile River hooligan.
Wednesday, May 11: Anchor River Salmon Video Operational for 2022 Season
Summary: The ADF&G video on the North Fork Anchor River began operating on May 5. As of May 11, no king salmon had been recorded passing upstream. The South Fork (Main Fork) sonar unit is not operational at this time and the weir is not in place yet. The first king last year passed on May 21, in 2020 on May 11, in 2019 on May 8, and in 2018 on May 22. The earliest king documented through weir was on May 4 in 2016. Wednesday, February 9: ADF&G Emergency Order: Retention of Arctic Char/Dolly Varden Prohibited in Fish Creek (Big Lake) Drainage
Summary: By emergency order, the Fish Creek drainage will be restricted to catch-and-release only for Arctic char/Dolly Varden starting Monday, February 14, and continuing through Saturday, December 31. Arctic char/Dolly Varden of any size may not be retained or possessed and must be released immediately. This order includes Big, Flat, and Mirror lakes.

Wednesday, January 26: ADF&G Emergency Order: King Salmon Restrictions in the Cook Inlet Salt Waters
Summary: By emergency order, all waters of Cook Inlet north of Bluff Point will be restricted from an annual limit of five (5) king salmon to two (2) kings starting Sunday, May 1, and continuing through Sunday, July 31. Additionally, king salmon fishing within 1 mile of shore will be closed during this period.

Summary: By emergency order, the Little Susitna River will be restricted to catch-and-release only for king salmon starting Sunday, May 1, and continuing through Wednesday, July 13. Additionally, only one unbaited, single-hook, artificial lure may be used. King salmon of any size may not be retained or possessed, may not be removed from the water, and must be released immediately.

Wednesday, January 26: ADF&G Emergency Order: Susitna River King Salmon Restricted to Catch-and-Release
Summary: By emergency order, all of the Susitna River drainage will be restricted to catch-and-release only for king salmon starting Sunday, May 1, and continuing through Wednesday, July 13. Additionally, only one unbaited, single-hook, artificial lure may be used. King salmon of any size may not be retained or possessed, may not be removed from the water, and must be released immediately. This order affects all roadside waters along the Parks Highway, including Willow, Kashwitna, Sheep, Montana, Talkeetna, and Middle and East forks of Chulitna River.

Wednesday, January 26: ADF&G Emergency Order: Changes to King Salmon Limits and Gear in the Ninilchik River
Summary: By emergency order, the Ninilchik River bag and possession limit for hatchery king salmon is increased from one (1) fish per day to two (2) starting Saturday, May 28, and continuing through Friday, July 15. Additionally, while bait will be allowed, only one single-hook may be used. All wild king salmon (fish with an intact adipose fin) may not be removed from the water and must be released immediately.

Hatchery-produced kings, fish with a missing adipose fin, will be allowed for retention with a 1 fish daily bag limit.

Summary: By emergency order, the Kasilof River will be closed to the retention of naturally-produced king salmon starting Sunday, May 1, through Thursday, June 30. This order is for all areas of the Kasilof River from Tustumena Lake to Cook Inlet. Additionally, only one single hook may be used either baited, unbaited, or on an artificial lure. Hatchery-produced kings, fish with a missing adipose fin, will be allowed for retention with a 2 fish daily bag limit.

Saturday, January 1: ADF&G Emergency Order: East Cook Inlet Beaches Remain Closed to Sport and Personal Use Clamming in 2022
Summary: By emergency order, all of the east-side beaches of Cook Inlet will be closed yet again during the 2022 season. This order is for areas from the Homer Spit north along western Kenai Peninsula to the mouth of Kenai River and includes popular sites such as Ninilchik Beach and Clam Gulch.
