Derby Categories

The list below represents the main categories for the 2017 fishing season, starting on May 1 and continuing through December 31. Anglers can register their catch(es) in as many categories as is applicable. Please click on each category to see a listing of species that qualify and terms involved.

Fly-Fishing Surf-Casting Freshwater All Species & Waters

Qualified Waters

Fish must be caught in water that is accessible by established/public road and highway, either directly or by developed trail. All waters on the continuous Alaska road system in Southcentral, Interior, Arctic, and Southeast qualify, unless located on private land where access is closed to general public. If in doubt or have any questions, please contact us.

Watercraft (kayak, canoe, drift boat, raft, float tube) are allowable means as long as there exists direct road access to the specific water where fish was caught. Fish caught in an adjacent or connecting drainage or waterway not on the main road system do not qualify.

Qualified Species

All officially recognized Alaska sport fish may be entered, as well as a number of non-sporting species that are primarily saltwater fish. This ensures a very competitive and varied field of anglers of all ages and skill sets that may participate with the chance of winning a prize.

How It Works

The top three derby contestants for each sub-category (king salmon, rainbow trout, etc.) in any of the main categories (fly-fishing, surf-casting, etc.) will automatically win either Roadside Angler merchandise (books, clothing) or service (website paid memberships). Each top sub-category winner will then be listed in the All Species & Waters category where a drawing will be held at the end of the season for three Grand Prizes, which may include a guided fishing charter, fly-in fishing trip, or service of similar prestige value.

A contestant may win only one Grand Prize; a Lifetime Membership will be awarded to contestants winning more than one top Grand Prize position.

No less than 10% of all proceeds from membership sales will go to a non-profit organization either involved with the rehabilitation of fish habitat or furthering the cause of sport fishing values. The exact financial contribution and recipient organization will be announced on this website within two weeks of derby ending.

Individuals holding paid memberships to RoadsideAnglersGuide.com automatically qualify to be in the derby.
